Report includes review of trends, use cases and potential challenges to adoption

San Francisco, CA, June 19, 2013 — In conjunction with the 6th annual Structure conference, GigaOM Research today published a new report (subscription required) titled, “The Internet of Things: A Market Landscape” by research analyst Jon Collins. While the Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to have a massive impact on business and wider culture, these are still early days. There is no standard definition of the technology yet, and protocols and standards are still in development. This report examines the trends driving the growth of the IoT, components of the IoT ecosystem, and characteristics of a “thing.”

The IoT is not a single technology trend, but rather a way of thinking about how the physical world at large and the objects, devices and structures within it are becoming increasingly interconnected. It’s about the convergence of the physical and the virtual as cloud computing and big data power the back-end processing and analytics that truly connect “things” with each other.

In this report, Collins looks at the scale of market opportunities and early examples of use cases, as well as potential inhibitors to adoption and emerging challenges, notably around security, privacy and system failure. He attempts to answer questions about what to expect from the IoT and how its impact will be felt across industries.

Up and comers of the next generation of cloud computing will present on stage at Structure conference

San Francisco, CA, May 28, 2013 – GigaOM today revealed its picks for Cloud Trailblazers: 10 for 2013. These 10 up and comers are rethinking and redesigning internet infrastructure for the next generation of cloud computing. They will present their ideas on stage at GigaOM’s Structure conference, being held June 19-20 in San Francisco.

The ones to watch are:

Narges Bani Asadi, CEO of Bina Technologies – changing the way medicine works with big data and high performance computing.

Matt DeBergalis, founder at Meteor Development Group – making real-time development and deployment possible.

Eric Frenkiel, CEO of MemSQL – building a better database without building a new database.

Mitchel Hashimoto, CEO of HashiCorp – building an open source suite of tools to configure and manage virtual machines.

Avinash Lakshman, founder of Hedvig – redesigning storage for massively distributed architectures.

David Mytton, CEO of Server Density – building tools to monitor massive groups of servers.

Matthew Prince, CEO of CloudFlare – rethinking security for a distributed world.

Jennifer Rexford, the Gordon Y. S. Wu Professor in Engineering at Princeton – building a new programming language for software-defined networking.

James Tamplin, CEO of Firebase – creating a new architecture for building scalable web apps quickly.

Jean Yang, a PhD candidate at MIT – writing a framework to allow programmers to build new services and features with privacy in mind.

Read more about their work here.

The infrastructure that supported the web in its early days is no longer up to the job. As businesses and consumers rely increasingly on the internet, companies that provide the underlying computing power are remaking the hardware and software on which those services depend. In doing so, they have changed the culture inside IT organizations, disrupted old-line businesses and made it easier than ever to build a web-based business.

“We’ve documented those shifts for the last six years at Structure, but this year we’re looking ahead,” said Stacey Higginbotham, senior writer for GigaOM and chair of Structure 2013. “We’ve found 10 big thinkers who are already planning the next generation of infrastructure and solving problems most companies aren’t even anticipating yet.”

Structure is GigaOM’s flagship event on cloud computing and internet infrastructure. More than 70 of the most influential technologists in cloud computing will take the stage, including:

Jeff Dean, Google

Jay Parikh, Facebook

Pat Gelsinger, VMware

Kevin Scott, LinkedIn

Werner Vogels, Amazon

Aneel Bhusri, Workday

Lew Cirne, New Relic

Ralph Loura, The Clorox Company

Bob Muglia, Juniper Networks, Microsoft

Hackathon winners to present on stage at Structure 2013

San Francisco, CA, May 22, 2013 – GigaOM is teaming up with Facebook to support the Open Compute Project’s second annual hardware hackathon on June 18. Winners will present their projects on stage to more than 500 technologists, journalists and investors at GigaOM’s Structure conference on June 19. Now in its sixth year, Structure is GigaOM’s flagship event focused on the future of cloud computing and internet infrastructure.

Limited to 100 participants, hackers will be vying for $10,000 in seed funding, mentoring from the Open Compute Project foundation, and the opportunity to pitch to venture capitalists and angel investors. Projects will judged on the completeness of the design, its applicability to scaled-out computing, and the probability of the hack attracting funding.

“Software may be eating the world, but in the last two years the shifts in computing have also led to shifts in the machines doing the actual computing,” said Stacey Higginbotham, senior writer for GigaOM and chair of Structure 2013. “As this market opens up there is an opportunity for startups and new ideas to infiltrate the multi-billion data center hardware industry now controlled by giants. We’re supporting this hackathon and bringing it to Structure so our audience has the chance to meet the world’s next Michael Dell or David Packard.”

Other topics and speakers to be featured at Structure include:

What’s keeping your CEO up at night – Ralph Loura, The Clorox Company, and Ben Haines, Pabst Brewing Company

Behind Google’s evolutionary leaps – Jeff Dean, Google
